RI-CHENG CHIAN, PH.D.

Ri-Cheng Chian, PhD is a Professor in the Division of Reproductive Biology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, McGill University, Montreal, Canada and holds a Visiting Professorship in seven Universities in China.

Dr. Chian is globally-recognized leader in the field of assisted reproductive technology and a pioneer in the development of in vitro maturation (IVM) and egg vitrification (freezing). His landmark 1999 New England Journal of Medicine paper describing the technique of "ovarian priming" ushered in a modern era for the clinical application of IVM. While at McGill University Health Center (MUHC) in Canada, Dr. Chian headed the first egg vitrification program to successfully result in viable pregnancies and live births. More recently, he has been instrumental in the creation of a novel treatment protocol which combines Natural cycle IVF with IVM (termed Natural cycle IVF/M).

Professor Chian is an inventor of the IVM Media Kit and the McGill Cryoleaf. He has published numerous often-cited research papers in peer-reviewed journals and is a frequent lecturer at both regional and international scientific conferences. Dr. Chian has edited two books and authored a large number of book chapters.

Dr. Chian is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics and was a former Associate Editor for the journal of Human Reproduction. He also serves as an Editorial Board Member for several other journals. Dr. Chian is a reviewer for a wide array of scientific journals including Fertility and Sterility, Reproduction, Biology of Reproduction, Reproductive BioMedicine Online, Endocrinology, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and The Lancet. Dr. Chian’s research interests are focused on 1) Ovarian function 2) The mechanism of oocyte maturation and activation 3) Fertility cryopreservation.
